However, the friction stir welding method is only applicable to a case where the overlapped members are heated members which are disposed in close contact with each other. In case of a sheet material member or a long member, the pin-type tool may be inserted into the heated members, and the members are bonded together by pressing the heated members or members with the pin-type tool. However, in such cases, it is difficult to control the pressing force, and therefore, it is difficult to control the quality of the welded joint.
Furthermore, in a case of the welded joint of the sheet members, a thicker member needs to be sandwiched between the sheet members. In this case, the pin-type tool can not be inserted into the welding zone. Therefore, the pin-type tool is inserted into the overlapped members, and then a larger pressing force is applied. In such cases, it is difficult to control the pressing force and the quality of the welded joint.
The present invention was made in view of the above circumstances, and it is an object of the present invention to provide an open end friction stir welding method and apparatus which can weld a pair of overlapped members with a non-heat source tool such as a pin-type tool, and which can weld the pair of overlapped members with a small pressing force.
